Avester's Column 73

I don't know when I wanted to type this out or why I'm even typing it out, but I'm not procrastinating any further. And since all of you have been protesting and screaming and yelling and holding huge signboards (you wish) indicating your interest in the addition of a new blogpost here, well I guess I should. Since the last one was done in a very emo-state let's start from 2 saturdays ago.

The v14 team from VJ, team name Ladies and Gentlemen for Fun on Foot, Singapore Heritage Challenge was the best out of all the VJ IP1 teams. Not bad, not bad. We ran around Singapore, getting angrier and worried and not pleased. Anyway we agreed that we will keep playing until we finally get a prize, which VJ did not get any this year. It's okay though, all that running around Singapore, answering questions, finding the Old Ford factory which was very annoying and getting lost on the bus made us quite... not caring about whether we won or not. But it's okay (seriously). At least we tried. And this kind of stuff happens ALL THE TIME.

Last friday. Trip to Singapore Arts Museum for Language Arts. We were there to appreciate The Arts. Well, I did learn one thing thorughout the whole trip, in which I was in 'hyper' mode and Jacky and I were running around discussing stuff. We learnt that chinese artists of the past lacked much creativity. Sure, they can create art. But they cannot NAME their art. So I see a picture of a horse galloping and the title for the picture is 'Galloping Horse'. I see a horse and a tree and the title is 'Horse Under Tree'. I see four chickens pecking at the ground and the title is 'Chickens'. I shall not go on. And as for modern art, well, it looks cool. There was a painting titled '23 monks' with monks walking in the background. Apparently jacky told me that the title made him feel like counting the monks and in doing so also instigated me into counting the monks in the picture. Guess what. There WERE 23 monks. And then we went into room 2.5 (Warning! we believe room 2.5 of Singapore Arts Museum is HAUNTED). The TV started playing weird sounds, like a frog croaking, only nastier. The pictures and sculptures talked about war and stuff used in war. There was a sculpture staring into a mirror and the way she stared at the mirror looked... scary. There was a weird emo-like mosaic pattern and after that we dashed out. 2 people alone in a room full of weird art stuff is just... scary. We met Dominic and Chenee who told us to go 2.6 while we 'advised' them to go 2.5. (Warning! We also believe room 2.6 of the Singapore Arts Museum to be semi-haunted). it was not as bad, except that it smelled... bad. There was weird statuettes of men, arranged into an army-like manner . Cool, but creepy. Luckily, there were no weird sounds. And after that Mr Ng announced it was time to go back to VJ. Yay for haunted museum rooms.

Saturday was VS Scouts Passing Over Ceremony. And apparently coincidentally very sadly VJ College Day. I want to make it for both, but I can't. I had no choice, i had a nervous breakdown on Friday evening. I would be letting Guo Qiang (and maybe WilBeng) and all the rest of the scouts down if I don't go for POC. We had planned everything nicely and well... I just could not miss it. VJ College Day *had* to go. At this point I apologise, but this whole thing made me emo for Sunday and Monday. I kept thinking about it. Either way I would have let people down, I'm sorry Ms Ngerng. It won't happen again.

And to cheer me up from my emo-ness into the happy-go-lucky character I always had been, it took A LOT of effort. Floored O2Mania (Pulse In Opus), Taiti, Bridge, Bowling with Jacky, Mahjong and Keyquest. After spamming all these multi-player (except Pulse In Opus) games, I felt much better. And I know some of my friends tried to cheer me up too (even though some just made it worse), so thanks a lot! I went for T42 with mr Chong today, and we talked about me being stressed out, with Final Year Exams coming in 5 weeks. FIVE WEEKS!!! Thats approximately 35 days, or 840 hours, or 50400 minutes, or 3024000 seconds! That's scary!!! And I already scared myself by getting 155 for bowling yesterday. Jacky was so scared too, he got 206, our best scores ever.

Tomorrow is Super Thursday. there's LA Essay on The Arts. I must do well, since my target for LA is a B3. Then there's Physics SPA, which I have to do well to pull up my Physics grades, not just my socks, even though my socks shouldn't really need pulling, haha. Chemistry quiz on Mole Concept. Must do well to maintain my Chem standard and get an A1.

And that's all so far. I just floored an entire supposedly procrastinated blogpost. This kind of stuff happens ALL THE TIME. HSo here's some wisdom/advice/random quote of the day. Don't get too paranoid. Don't get so stressed. Relax, take everything the happy-go-lucky style. Take everything in stride. Whatever you do, never, NEVER panic. Panic messed up half of my review test papers. And it's NOT going to happen again in EOY. This kind of stuff happens all the time, yes, but you CAN prevent panic, and you MUST prevent panic. Because look at what panic already done...

Sometimes, strange things happen to us. Maybe you would have experienced it before, there are times when we just... don't feel like doing anything. I look around, I ask myself, what am I doing?

Take yesterday for example. I was faced with one of the most pressurizing decisions to make. VJ College Day VS Scouts Passing Over Parade. And now I feel conflicted by my decision. I have... disappointed people. I have that feeling inside me that keeps telling me I shouldn't have done it. That feeling would stay inside me no matter which choice I picked. Maybe its just because I'm not really my positive, hyper, crazy self this weekend. I always had that feeling that other people expected a lot from me, and they're definitely not getting their money's worth, I guess. I always tell myself I can be better, that I should be better than what I am now. That's what I have heard during the parent-teacher meet last term. That's what I learnt during PLTC.

I should be, but I can't. That's all I think I can say. After aimless thinking and not bothering to do homework, I decided to play Shenkuu Warrior. After 30 minutes, I asked myself in shock. Why is my score 5172? It should have been in the 11k zone by then...

There was a box of cards on the table. It was not full, in fact, nearly empty. He removed all the cards inside and put them on the table. There was only one suit. Yet without rearranging, he knew that there was something wrong with that one suit.

He panicked. Where was that card? It didn't really matter, but at least a complete suit would be better since the rest of the deck was missing. He started looking around. Where was it? WHERE WAS THAT MISSING CARD?

He was engulfed with panic. His search became aimless. He wandered around, not caring about anything. He wanted to find it, but he KNEW his search was going to be fruitless. He stopped. Something inside him snapped. NO! He couldn't take it anymore. He tossed the twelve cards in his hand into the air, ripping them apart one by one. What use were they if the final card to complete the suit was not there? There was no aim, no meaning to them anymore!

Something inside him snapped. He stopped and asked himself, WHAT HAPPENED? He surveyed the torn cards scattered around him. He fell to the floor, lying on the mess of torn cards. It was then he noticed it. A card, jammed under one of the table legs. he eagerly reached for it, not caring that the table will lose its balance and everything would topple over. Amidst the breaking of the plates and cups as they hit the floor, he unfolded the card. It WAS the missing card. But WAIT-something was horribly wrong. He panicked again, but he shouldn't have. Because look what panic already done...

Yay my group's presentation rocked! We won!

Yes, I did enjoy IndiEventure week. We did our best with our product, BagTrack, and much to our surprise, we won, together with Jianghan's group! Good job to all the finalists, and everyone who participated. I'm sure we all enjoyed ourselves, and we have to get ready for studies once again next week.

Okay, today was our preliminary presentation, so everything was very rushed and I did not have time to take photos. You know, I always seem to work better only under pressure. We had 2 hours to rush and prepare and proofread and what-not the presentation and then the 5 groups gathered with Mr Lin and Ms Ng for the presentation. Apparently my group had the most interesting Q&A, since all the questions Mr Lin wanted to ask have been asked by the floor. Oh well, our project made it to the finals! Yay!

And since we're going to do the presentation, an updated version, tomorrow, you may want some interesting behind the scenes video to watch first. Here's the video ad we used:

We worked on the bag and powerpoint today, below you can see some shots of our product. We designed a 'socket' to be placed in the bag, along with wires. And I also had some fun in v12 doing weird random stuff.

Presentation is tomorrow. Which means we have to prepare everything by... tomorrow morning!

Day 2. We worked on our prototype today, a $9 bag from Giant with transparent OHP plastic-"solar panels" superglued on them. And as usual, we are lmodulusl. (Oops, I meant model-less.) So I'm the bag model. Cool eh? I also had fun self-sniping shots in my class. They're for an ad on the bag, which I believe would be highly successful. We already have a catchy name for it!

Oh and I spent time in the computer lab exploring Dreamweaver. Now I'm a Dreamweaver newbie-turned-expert in 1 hour! Remade the entire layout for my blog with it.

Oh, so my Indieventure combination is Chemistry Physics. I did get Chemistry, but no LA, and then there's Physics. I got my worse subject and my best subject.

I don't see how that is even possible, BUT...

Today we started brainstorming. We're supposed to make an accessory or garment that is eco-friendly and is aesthetically pleasing. It must also have Chemistry and Physics applications. Not much about my group's project so far, not much to know, not much to say.

We also went to NUS for a field trip and we were given a presentation on Design and Architecture. We were also shown some of the works the undergrads worked on, which reminded me a lot about D&T. Here are all the cool pictures!

Avester's Column 72

To start off Wednesday, we had to bid for 1 of 3 Indie-Venture teasers. One was on survivor, one was on Mas Selamat's Escape and Risk, one was on Fashion. Well, I bidded for Fashion because I just didn't like the other two and fashion had a tinge of LA in it (or sort of, from my point of view). Since I can't figure out which one is Chem, I might as well take the LA one and be happy with it, right?

Got back Physics too. 44/80. Passed. I almost thought I failed, given that Physics is my worst subject, the slackest I studied for, I messed up my vectors and kinematics, and the class average is 40/80. I was...feeling okay. I thought I was almost going to get really really scared and depressed.

Which brings my total RT scores to, in trump order,

Chemistry 28/40
Language Arts 33/50
Math 38/50
Biology 20/40
Chinese 53/110
Physics 44/80

My year end goal is to try to get 60 for all my weaker subjects (and LA), and maybe A for Chem and Math, if I work hard. As for Chinese, I need that pass, and I'm going to dedicate time and effort to make sure I pass with a 60 perhaps? And to all my friends, if you've not done well for any tests, it's okay, work harder!

Thursday we had Home Based Learning, aka Slack Day. First period Chinese. 75% of time on Yooyuball, 25% of time taking screenshots of the slides the Chinese teacher went through. I'm the smarter one lol, all of you copying desperately while I took screenshots and took my time to copy later. (Sorry, I deleted the screenshots already). LA. 3 Free Periods with Research Task. Spent 1 hour answering everyon'e questions, queries, doubts on the homework and after doing half of it I shut down my com and went to take a 30min nap. Physics. 75-25 rule. (As I heard the lesson on my headphones, I was pretty amused. It was ridiculously funny.) Chem. Mr Lin's MSN. So everyone stoned there, sliding through a powerpoint and finally, after 20 minutes of inactivity, people started asking Mr Lin questions. I actually didn't play! Our final lesson was Chaos Theory, and the server conveniently crashed, signalling an immature dismissal for the day. I ended up talking nonsense with Jacky, Kai Yi, Charmaine and Kimberly on MSN (all the Chaos people) and we had an emocon/nudge/wink war on MSN. And all that time Michelle was oblivious to such interesting 'activities'. Wow.

Yesterday we had a talk on TCM. The speaker was quite good, its just...why must the talk be in Chinese? I mean-yes, no duh, TCM Talk...in Chinese, but well, it just couldn't ring that bell in my head.

Yesterday was also (officially) Ms Ong's last day in VJ.She gave our class a box of biscuits, which I refused to eat because I'm that sentimental guy. The box and Ms Ong's note to the class are currently in my locker at school and are given a status equivalent to my red cloth: Sacred Artifact, Do Not Touch. She told the class in her note that we were a great class and we had the potential to do well and she wished us all the best in VJ and IP. Thank you Ms Ong! We won't forget you! (:

Today's meeting was interesting, haha.

Morning we had CPR Test. I went there unprepared and winged it (and passed!). Wei An took first, failed miserably (seriously), then Guo Qiang, Kin Tuck and Kah Fong all passed. I was next, and surprisingly, I passed CPR!!! *cheers* My test subject was Kah Fong, he was a much better test subject than me (and he did help me a bit haha). Got stuck at recovery position, the last part, so he did sneak a few answers. Yay.

Sing song session. Wow. Super messed up. Sec1s didn't feel like singing. So we had a little competition. Basically, if all the Sec1s cannot sing louder than me, they would be punished. I was outnumbered something like 15-1. And the results? Well, it became a shouting contest and we really could not tell over my loud singing of Pearly Shells. It was a draw, but I should have won because the Sec1s can't carry a tune in a bucket, I was singing while they were shouting unrhythmically. Hah!

Today's Patrol Leader Council (PLC) Meeting was lame. We sat there from 2.30pm till 6.50pm and we hardly discussed anything. Let's talk about the campfire. So we spent 1 hour arguing over the theme, debunking everyone else's ideas and basically shouting inside the den. Oh it was classic, Wei An and Kun Hao wanted a theme 'Water'.

Stunnish eh? I mean, what can you talk about 'Water'? How can you have a campfire that goes by the lines of 'Under the Sea...'? You can't! it would be a major epic failure. It was obviously stupid. Then they suggested other lame stuff too. Let me try to recall a fraction of the list of themes.

So in the end, Wil Beng gave 4 options. He was fed-up with the whole bunch of Sec3s arguing for more than an hour. The Options were: Masquerade (a random word he was thinking about which I bet he had no idea what it meant), Land of the Rising Sun-Japan (he wanted something Oriental), The Beijing Night (he was thinking of Shanghai Knights...*shakes head in disgust*) and Arabic.

Arabic and Masquerade had a tie 13-13 in a double round vote, so our final decision is *not telling* *coughombinationcough*

And we all got our jobs for campfire. I'm doing programme planning with Ziyad. *sneaky smile*

To wrap it all up, Xiu Qi and I had a nice sentimental talk about...well nothing in general. If the two of us shared anything in common, the obvious one would be that both of us are sentimental, we appreciate and recollect the past and present and look forward to the future, both of us with uncertainty. He asked me, 'Is it more important to be the best against everybody, or be better than yourself?' Sounded a lot like LA right? Well, in my opinion, he really can be a KI student if he goes to VJ next year. We talked a lot while swinging on the wooden swing in VS, the one that had unsteady knots that looked as if 2 people of total weight 120kg will break it (but it didn't-surprise), talked about importance, talked about the two of us taking stuff so relaxed whereas others are so panicky and rushed, talked about society and the future, talked about his O Levels. Basically he needs morale and encouragement. Xiu Qi, you already know what you want to do. If you can make it to VJ, it would be even better. Who knows, many years later, I would see my good friend as a renowned psychologist? (It really suits your personality, honestly).

That's all for now. Next week is Indieventure Week, and I also have a lot of work to do, including piano exams, yooyuball finals, powerpoint for wilbeng, planning campfire stuff and the National Heritage competition. Be thankful you aren't as loaded as I am, seriously.

Okay, so it seems Avester enjoys putting weird theories and ideas together just to give himself hope that something will happen, something going by the lines of Teaser 3 for Indieventure could be LA Chem Combination.

And as usual, all abstract theories must have some proofs, so here we go!

Avester's 71st Column

I shall now comment on last Saturday's Scout Meeting, in which my previous 'comment' *coughcough* done two days ago was quite enlightening.

Then again, I shall decide not to and INSTEAD talk about what happened with Ziyad, Ivan and I in Pizza Hut. More fun facts about Avester revealed: He is a cheese fanatic.

More like obsessive cheese disorder, please. You won't believe what I WE did to our pizzas with the cheese. Okay, so pictures are worth 1000 words (and in this case, a thousand cries of ~~shock~~ fascination), so I'll post the pictures on my blog when I get them.

Then again, I realise that you people probably want to know what happened. if you conveniently accessed my good friend Ziyad's blog, you can read his blogpost which de---OH! I have decided to be nice and quote the whole thing.

"Avester, Ivan and I went to Pizza Hut for lunch. Lunch was... Cheesy.Very. Cheesy.

I bet you wanna know why lunch was cheesy. Bottle of cheese. Full bottle of cheese. Meal. End meal. Cheese bottle is left with less than a quarter of it filled with cheese. Some cheese on pizza. Some cheese left on plate. Some cheese in Pepsi. Some cheese almost on the bill. Eh Avester?"

Oh you get the idea. Now, all we need to do is wait for the pictures! *sneaky smile*

After coming back from the South East Area campfire on Saturday night, I did something I couldn't believe I could do. I switched on my com, switched off MSN and spammed yooyuball until 1+++am. The cheese demon is crazy...haha.

Yesterday the class went for a class outing, which I had no choice but to admit it was successful to a reasonable extent (to which at points I disagree but still...). We spent a lot of time in front of escalators at Tampines Mall / Century Square arguing (okay, maybe discussing sounds better...) about where to go. In the end, we went to Jack's Place for Lunch and we were so scared that we had to pay for the garlic bread and Bryan just *had* to tell us stories on how he ate 3 digit dollars worth of garlic bread. I was there tasting their water. ICE WATER FTW!!! That was random, anyway after that we went to watch Hancock. It was reasonably funny, haha. Then we went to Safra for Bowling and Bryan beat Jacky, while I settled for 3rd, Michelle 4th and Kai Yi 5th. (See, I did not say last...)

That's about everything. Now we go to the entertainment section of the blogpost (if the above was not entertaining enough!)

Well, we all know that AvesterLand is a leading provider of rumous and gossips that are of a certain high standard and quality, in which you have no choice but to agree with that statement as invisible giagantic laser blasters are pointed at your back as you read this.

Anyway, I have high hopes and an inclination to believe that Language Arts and Chemistry is an Indieventure combination. The proofs:

1. Mr Lin is in charge of Indieventure and we have heard him mention 'Language Arts' in class before (more than once, I think... o.O)

2. The LA and Chem teachers seem close. *cough*

3. The LA and Chem teachers are equally dramatic.

4. Last year's combinations were LA and Bio, Chem and IH, Maths and Physics. So... that means LA WON'T be with Bio this year, and Chem won't be with IH (this year it's History, last year was Lit, I think).

5. I am a hopeful and positive person (a bit no link, but well, we should always be hopeful, right??? *makes a Mr Leonard Ng smile*)

Okay, that's all about my predictions and forecasts. Now let's have an editorial panel. As I type this in class, apparently people infiltrate, lure me away and type their messages here.

I LOVE ANTI-ANTI-SOCIAL! <33333333 *bimbo cheesy smile* (Bernice typed that...)

Hmm. Waiting for Indieventure, hoping desperately for that trump combo (Language Arts and Chemistry) Please Please PLEASE make that combo available this year since it was not available last year. And someone made me do the powerpoint for Scouts POP so I'll be busy after that. And then there's yooyuball FINALS!!! Omg, that's so fast! And I have piano exams. And I have a history competition. And I have donation draw tickets to sell. That's a hectic month for me. Especially after going through Review test Week.

I'm blogging. Yay.

Avester's Column 70

What interesting events took place over the last couple of days? Let's see... *violently shakes table* we received some of our review test papers *gasps* and we had some new, PERMANENT changes in some of our teachers.

For starters, I shall talk about my review test results. I scored 20/40 for Bio, wait, wait, wait-I know you must be wondering what happened, and I really shouldn't be giving excuses and pushing the blame *BUT* I messed up. I went in, saw the paper and memory blanked. That was uber scary, I messed up stuff I shouldn't have like the definition of osmosis, confused the biological molecules and- I shan't go further. Haha.

Next we had Maths. I was scared at first, as in really *REALLY* scared. I got a 38/50, which i really had no idea whether it was good or bad. I tried and got stumped by logarithms and the stupid trick question on quadratics (question 3). Arrrrgghhh!!!

Today I got back trump card. Mr Lin is back after being on MC (I wonder who cheered so loudly on Monday...) The Chemistry paper was (I had that feeling, yes) something I did not actually want to get back. I thought I messed up the essay question. I was just sitting there, shaking the table nervously thinking random thoughts. Mr Lin was nice (albeit dramatic) with the cut the deck thing and all, I think that helped to calm me down a little. I got 28/40. What I messed up: Definition of isotopes, Bond strength and a really really *REALLY* lame MCQ question in which we were all thoroughly tricked (question 10) and spent some time arguing in desperation for marks. (Obviously...we did not get them)

Okay, enough on results. We had 2 new teachers this week, and after a spolied name swap thing with Dominic (TWICE!!!) I found them quite nice. (Especially the math teacher, her pace is okay)

And since you're already reading and asking yourself why you are reading this and being asked silly questions such as why you are reading this, I might as well tell you something that happened in combined assembly this morning. They were reading off a long list of names of people who were supposed to see Ms Toh, and I obviously was not listening. I mean, what are the chances of such a nice person like me being called up? Yes, I was called up. So in front of Ms Ngerng who was sitting next to Ms Toh, I asked Bryan 'Meet who?' and then he also had no idea.

Oh and just for your information, I had no idea why but Ms Toh went to VS Arrow Scouts 12th PLTC. She saw my patrol's pioneering project (which OWNED!!!) and was busy chatting away with Wil Beng and the other adult leaders.

Finally, there's Chaos tomorrow. Marine Bio is over, and now my elective class is Chaos. (glances at wikipedia) Chaos theory is PHYSICS!!! I had no idea and I took it. How to get double elective ex like that? HOW???

*takes a deep breath* Let's ~~see~~ hope if this is muggable...
