Avester's Column 57

Open House on Saturday was cool. (I know the weather was 31C, but we had air-cons blasting full blast at ~20C). Anyway, it was quite fun. To some extent.

Before the actual presentations Ser Qi and Michelle barged into o7v11 with a vacuum cleaner. I BROUGHT THE THING UP TO 08v11 and YOU BROUGHT IT DOWN AGAIN?!?!?!?!?! And we vacuumed the place. You should have seen me wearing the vacuum haversack and vacuuming the place. I think Eduardo has a picture of it. I looked...weird with that 'thing' on my back. And vacuuming was not very fun either.

LA Presentation was not messed up. I repeat: IT WAS NOT MESSED UP. Working with Eduardo, Rachel and Sulin and it was quite a new experience. Learnt a lot of stuff including new LA theories on the Arts, watched 'Cut' and presented a lot. Seven times to be exact. And all four LA teachers spammed us with questions on Friday, the day before open house. When I use the word 'spam', I don't joke. It was a free for all. And it was crappy. Ms Ong and Ms Sandhya asked a lot of weird questions...Ms Chiam asked better, somewhat MORE relavant questions and Mr Ng stared at us.

We were panicking and were trying to reply the questions (you don't want to know my replies...haha.) Anyway, I think as a whole, it offered me a great new insight on LA. And suddenly (actually all the time) I feel motivated to study LA and make sure I don't fail the next oooooooh there's Spongebob on TV see you in 30 minutes time...

Oh and besides that, Ms Ong bought us free thaipan fried rice. THANKS MS ONG!!! :)

Before I left, Dominic and Jacky roped me in to help them move a table from the registration area back into LT5. The table was heavy (okay fine...maybe that was obvious.) We wanted to er... slack and move the SPONSORED EXPENSIVE AND WELL-DESIGNED (just kidding about the well-designed part) table by sliding it down the steps in LT5, but Ms Ngerng saw us and obviously I cannot tell you what happened after that. So there. Go figure it out yourself.

The electives presentation was cool (someone must have done something to the air-con!!!!!). Did all of you see my marine bio video? Haha. I have to give a big thank you to the philosophy people who sat there grudgingly and listened to the crazed sound effects a whopping 96 times! Thanks Thai Yong and company for not making too much noise about it (aka silently fuming...). I also think that the marine bio people did a great job (Jo-ann had to grab some mucky coral on Friday for the preparation) for the Open House!

Bridge is getting really slack in class. Not only are people not interested...but people are just not interested. Actually they are too busy copying homework to bother. Sigh. 3 Aces and its a wash. That was... not very pleasing. What is wrong with people today?

Timing for 2.4: 11.39. Haha. Owned. 2nd fastest boy for 08v14. Palani owned me by a lot but I still made it. *silent cheering*

Had like 4 careless mistakes in Chem Open book test. Sigh. It's not studying hard that counted...its answering with accuracy. Lesson learnt: always be careful. It's okay. I shall do better the next one (with accuracy).

Guess there's nothing else to talk about. It's just homework and homework and homework and yeah. No juicy news, no gossip, no discussion, no nothing. This week has a public holiday, and since it's the first of month, I have some major tasks to fufill by then. So I'll be really busy. (Yes, I'm always busy doing stuff that really cannot fall into the 'busy' category...)

You didn't think I'd end a post like that without fresh and juicy gossip right?

Today after PE me and a few girls (yes I know it's lousy grammar!) were discussing stuff over a game of bridge and maths homework.

Why do girls like to be vulgar?

Yes, when I said that a certain 'entity' was fuming. Not silently. Quite loud actually. Making a lot of noise. Fine. You get the idea.

Anyway back to the girls and the vulgar thing part. The rest of the post is solely my own opinion (not that the entire post was not already in my own opinion... but you get the idea...okay???). Girls shouldn't be vulgar. Personally I find it crude and wrong and stupid. So some joker invented the f-word. And more jokers decided to expand to that vocabulary. And now everyone is happily spamming and adding to that directory of words. Using vulgarities degrades oneself.

If that wasn't as juicy as you thought it would be then you had no idea what happened today after PE. No matter, I shan't elaborate facts. Not my thing.

Avester's Column 56

A lot of preparation going on for LA. That still will not spoil my mood.

Let's have a sample Q&A I prepared:

So, what is the most difficult module you covered so far for LA?
I would say it is Struggle For Meaning. Not only did almost everyone fail, but...oh wait I can't say that...

How does LA differ from mainstream English Language?
Well, we learn techniques and theories to help prepare us for GP and KI. As such there is also a spike in the number of failures...oh wait I can't say that too...

Why is Literature not integrated into LA?
Because if that happened, there would be more failures...

What is the expected standard of English for a student to enter VIP?
Not a failing one. And a prepared to fail one.

Do you enjoy LA?
Yes, but not the failing bit...

Okay, obviously the above statements are not going to be the answers I'm going to give if those questions are going to be asked. I just need to be...er...prepared!!!

Other than that, I must catch up with my Physics. I *almost* (yes haha ALMOST! Not actually but ALMOST!!! HAHAHA *pokes fun at all those who REALLY slept*) fell asleep. Not that the lesson was broing but it was just the afternoon, feeling full and not enough sleep that morning yeah... kinematics is so super cool and FUN okay... compared to thermal physics kinematics rock like duh~~~~~!!!!! Anyway, my goal is to not fail physics (not that I'm even failing it but I have a feeling maybe...) Just like LA, I know the theory yet don't know how to apply, sighs.

Read this cool excerpt. I bet many of you DON'T know this.

In physics, a change in position over a period of time is called velocity. Likewise a change in velocity over a period of time is called acceleration, and a change in acceleration over a period of time is called jerk.

The last word describes a lot about some of our teachers. So if a jerk has an SI Unit of ms/s/s (or ms^-3) then...we had better start running really fast. (That statement really had a lot of connotations, if you get what it meant!)

You really can learn a lot of Physics from Lenny Conundrum. Especially if your answer was so CLOSE... so so so CLOSE...

And for those nerds out there who really want to make a killing for physics, the following is the order of derivatives for distance. They are measured in m, m/s, m/s/s, m/s/s/s, m/s/s/s/s, m/s/s/s/s/s and m/s/s/s/s/s/s respectively. They are displacement, velocity, acceleration, jerk, snap, crackle and pop. No, they are not describing party-go'ers. They somehow somewhat mysteriously surprisingly and unfortunately do exist.

Next, let's discuss what happened earlier this week. Instead of playing bridge we played Guess the Card. And the first time I shuffled, the top card was 5 Spades.

Nothing wrong right? Next shuffle by me again the top card came 6 Spades.

And the scary stuff started rolling in. After two shuffles, the top card was 7 Spades. After another three shuffles, 8 of Spades rolled itself open. And when I got home and played around shuffling cards for fun...9 Spades appeared.

I almost got so scared...I ran into my room, closed the door and started doing logarithms. Now how freaky is that?

2 Chinese Essays in one week. Had to rush through them frantically because of well...not really that there was a 'because of...' but...

We are using Open House to cover up as an excuse for almost every single piece of assignment.

And we (me, Kimberly, Jing Xin, Charmaine, Natalie) wrote an apology letter on the wall outside the staff room because the tables outside were used up. So we wrote and discussed in a very unhappy fashion on converting words from english to chinese. We were writing outside the wall of the English Department and 2 teachers came out to er... 'inspect'.

Ms Ong: What are ALL of you doing outside here? Writing sob story ah?
Us: *stunned* It's an apology letter...we are late in submitting our chinese essays...
Ms Ong: How late?
Us: 3 days...including tomorrow...
Ms Ong: *gave us a stunned look* So why are you writing on the wall of the staff room?

After a short conversation she left us still figuring out some conversion of english to chinese stuff and we started discussing so loudly another teacher decided to 'spot-check'.

Ms Sandhya: What ARE all of you doing outside the staff room? I can hear every word you people are saying...
Us: Wait if she can hear that means......... *silence*

Very anti-climatic.

Okay now it's back to LA Presentation. That's all for now I guess.

I'm addicted to bridge.

That was seriously unsurprising.

Okay here's my exciting to-do-list this week:

1. Spam the Sec2 scouts inboxes with VIP Open House details.
2. Do the Video for Stevenson patrol. (and try to find that cool pic of Wil Beng)
3. Practice trigonometry and use it to calculate trajectory in Shenkuu Warrior. (It helps, I tried it :P)
4. Start learning how to make rollovers. (They are like...so cool...)
5. Blog more often.

When I finally decide to upload my camera photos (which may happen after I finally decide to charge its battery, which may happen when I finally decide to unlock some free time to do so) then I will show you all those exciting pictures from the Scouts Pulau Ubin cycling trip 2 Saturdays ago. Sorry for the lag.

Avester's Column 54

Okay, don't complain. I'm updating my blog.

Alright, the comics were supposed to be part of an April Fools' joke but I decided to take em down cos of 2 reasons.

1. They ending was super cliche and you will laugh. I shall spare you of that great moment.
2. Something else popped into my mind.

Never mind them. Let me focus on the super unimportant events that took place last week. Then again, besides the fact that I've learned bridge and learned a new catch phrase, nothing else really happened.

What does VARSE mean, you may ask. It's not a word (even if it really coincidentally IS a word then sadly it's supposed meaning has nothing to do with the meaning I intend to associate with it). VASRE, as you can tell from my hilariously unorganized MSN Nick:

And what else does it mean? Well, I'm saving that bit for a much later post.

Let's discuss what I did for the weekend.

Saturday no scouts. Wasted (not exactly wasted but you get the point) my whole morning doing nothing except logarithms. Mogarithms after logarithms until i doodled a dancing log that resembles Wil Beng in my textbook. Then I meaningfully spent my afternoon illustriously spamming shenkuu warrior. My goal is lofty and ambitious-I want to get the gold trophy for Shenkuu Warrior this May. So I aslo spent my Sunday afternoon spamming shenkuu warrior. That was when I realised eeeeekkkk!!! There's a geography assignment due tomorrow!!!

You can thus imagine the moment of shocking truth and horror. (It lasted 10 seconds or so...) Anyway, I started digging for my geog file, found the assignment and told myself that I would really be in big trouble if I don't finish it tonight!

And here I am blogging. I finished my Assignment on Refugees in 2hours 16 minutes. Complete with header, footer, backer and reference notes. Beat that!

PS: About the Varse thing, I'll get it done as soon as I learn the art of creating rollovers. And when I can squeeze out some time......)

I almost forgot some *interesting* stuff from yesterday. Two people WHICH I HAVE NEVER KNOWN COULD DO FUNNY tried to be funny (LITERALLY funny...) That made me go like... 'diao...', please please please don't ever try to do funny again because you people just...cannot do funny. Seriously...you people cannot do funny and I'd really think you'd be better off not doing funny.

Mr Lin: Hmm...something seems to be wrong today...
Me: Dominic's not here...
Mr Lin: No, Dominic NOT here is right...
Me (and almost the rest of the class) thinking huh???: Bryan and Chen Ee are also not here...
Mr Lin: What are they doing in the toilet???

Then there was Wil Beng. Sms 'convo'...

Wil Beng: Are you coming for the UG photoshoot this afternoon at 445pm?
Me: I'm not. I have official lesson until 5.30+++
Wil Beng: Try to come lah...
Me: But it's really official lesson, not some CCA or something...

Something was wrong on Thursday...maybe not today because I spent a sizeable portion of it frantically rushing through my Literature Essay.

Literature is still on my top 3 list (which has never changed since Sec1). Don't worry! You won't be kicked out for any other subject! *coughLAcough*

Elective outing to Underwater World Sentosa!!!

Well today we went to Sentosa for Marine Bio. Before I go into the part where I say HAHAHAHA my elective is much cooler than yours and we can slack and enjoy and learn COOL stuff in field trips to awesome places with minimal homework and a lot of exciting group collaboartion projects that are more fun than you can ever imagine and you really should have joined Marine Bio HAHAHAHA, I would like to tell you some silly stuff.

PS: I am tired of laughing.

Anyway, today Qing Hui was not here. I seized this opportunity to invade Jacky's table. It was SERIOUSLY MUCH MORE lively than my table. About what we discussed, that was confidential material (but we generated a lot of jokes). I don't understand why Jacky doesn't appreciate that table LOL. The people there tell spastic-ly good jokes... and are quite interactive... Oh well, moving on.

On the bus to Underwater World Sentosa, I sat at the back and talked to girls. Partly because the only boy I could talk to was Joshua and...well...you probably can imagine him not wanting to talk to me. I never took any initiative to start conversation with him. So instead I ended up sitting at the back of the bus gossiping with a bunch of girls. Yes, gossip gossip gossip. Actually the main gossip was about me and fish. Who are the 'bunch of girls'? Okay fine, they are in some random order: Janice (v11), Yitong (v12), Jaime (v13) and Jo-ann (v14). We gossiped a lot. Here is an extract of our conversation:

Me: Have you people done SI-3?
Janice: Is it the one on Gender?
Jo-ann: You mean the one where Yunita was going crazy that one?
Jaime: I thought...
Yitong: Haha we got Ms Ong for LA
Me and Jo-ann: *stare* *fuming* *displeased gestures*
Janice: What happened...
Me: We were talking about homosexuality...
Jo-ann: No its the earlier part that was interesting...
Me: *confused* Eh?
Jaime, Janice, Yitong: *excited look*
Jo-ann: Do you know what some people said in class? We were talking about-------[censored material]
Me: Must you say that? All of you come from girls schools right?

Then we talked about PSLE scores. Yitong, Janice and Jo-ann all 25+, above my 251. Jaime 246.

Me: Are girls our age supposed to er...act crazy and weird and irrational?
Yitong: Wait...who are you talking about?
Janice then gave them that 'isn't it obvious???' look.
I gave them my spastic look.
Jaime: Oh wait wait wait...I thought girls only discuss these stuff in a girls school?
Janice: But now different lah...
Me: *thinking that it was SERIOUSLY wrong...*
Yitong: Mixed school leh?
Jaime: Oh yea hor...

The whole conversation and gossip was terribly wrong. It sort of continued with a lot of spastic activity at Underwater World. I started walking around snapping pics with a spastic look...it was weird and stupid and yeah...

Jaime wanted to go Underwater World for elective then head to Botanic Gardens for Cross Country and argues with Jianghan for a dramatic 5 minutes with Manu, me and the other girls looking stunned and giving that spastic look. If I can recall right...

Jianghan: You really going ah? Later must go botanic gardens leh!
Jaime: Never mind I leave Underwater World at 3.15 then take taxi
Me: Eh but Sentosa is near CBD ...you cannot anyhow flag a cab leh you must go to designated stands...
Enan: No lah I don't think Sentosa counted...
Jianghan: Doesn't matter about the taxi. She go there less than half an hour come out again... not worth it lah...
Jaime: But I want to see the fish...
Jianghan: You want to pay go in and come out in 30min ah?
Me: Eh Jaime you go in see just one fish and come out...
Jianghan: Maybe one fish also cannot see lah, later got accident then the bus late...
Jaime: But I just want to see the fish...
Jianghan: *frustrated look* Go for cross lah...
Jaime: But if I don't go Underwater World Mr Foo will give me a big F leh!
*Mr Foo laughing in background*
Jianghan: *very frustrated look*
Manu: *very frustrated look*

In the end Jaime won and stayed and Jianghan and Manu left and didn't come along...and Jaime skipped cross lol...

Me: Eh I'm trying to get some photos so that I can make a video so that we can present SOMETHING for our Elective during Open House
Jo-ann: Huh?
Me: Okay, can you act like you are pointing and whah-ing and excited?
Janice: Not original lah...

Jaime: No way...
Me: Like that lah... *start waving around*
Jo-ann: Eh it's really not original...
Me: *thinking that the video is going to be like so crappy...* Can you people at least act interested?
Jaime: But we are interested!

Avester's Column 53

This Week: A Review

April Fools Day, the whole IP1 cohort spammed 1-2's class. Scared Miss Ong. I have a few photos of the spam and I will upload them...when I feel free. Then those jokers made a fake Avester out of bags and a crash helmet and covered it with the signature red cloth and attempted to scare Miss Ong for the second time in the same day. She wasn't. (luckily)

Then yours truly was made to sms and chase some slackers for their LA homework. Miss Ong complained that the class has no standard, some type some write then got people hand in late, like our CT Rep, who didn't hand in a single piece of homework on time AT ALL this whole week. Sheesh. Then she said that my sms skills are quite slow 'for youths my age'. Yes, I cannot sms fast at all, but I have computer skills to make up for that.

College Mag meeting. We wanted to get our own domain after everyone's complaints about the lagging school server. There are just too many pics and animations on it that it can crash my computer. MY COMPUTER-WHICH NEVER CRASHED EVEN WHEN I OPEN 11 NEOPETS GAMES AT ONE GO. Yes, so we discussed the pros and cons of merging with Subjectif while sniping a bag of chips. We decided not to merge and wanted to get our own domain, then we sidetracked and discussed about fund-raising (yes, I'm very good at fund-raising). I have not been informed of any decisions yet.

Then we got back our Chinese test papers on Wednesday and the essay on Thursday. I never failed any subject before and now almost everything is dropping faster than Wil Beng shouting "Shit dropping". Yes it was terrible, yet Jacky owned. Why? WHY??? It's Chinese...and there is no way to mug for it!!! WHY?????

Aced Chem quiz. THANK YOU Wong Liang Seng. THANK YOU^infinity! I will NEVER forget you (even more so for daoing me TWICE on sports day) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! It's coz' of you I managed to learn my formulas well!!! I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT!!! *exaggerated moment* Okay, moving on...

Sports Day friday. Met a big bunch of losers who came in late and had their names taken down. Mr Chia wasn't there at all (making my foresight wrong...grrrrrr......) One big sotong clap for all those losers who decided to come and came late. Then we had VS people running all over VJ, and it was a big mess (but not a big fluke......haha jacked) Great job to the Scouts Team! Yes you guys did your best! I know there were some difficulties but it was a great try nontheless!!!

Learnt how to Repair a bike at Arrow Recreation Club today. Beng insisted the Sec3s stay back...but the number of Sec3s that came today was pretty pathetic. Koped a bike and cycled around (inside & outside) VS-the feeling was super cool. I loved the part where my bike crashed into Joel Liew at the bus stop! We learnt the different parts of the bike and will begin repair works on the 22 bikes after SA1 period in VS. Why are the bikes so dusty? Why are the tires de-aired? Why are some of the pedals missing and some chains off and other weird technical problems??? We'll find out more with the ARC soon.

Shu Liang tried to make me the PR for ARC. I would definitely make a good Public Relations Manager...if I had something to do...I was asked to find out more about the new guy when in the end he just introduced himself and there was nothing much to find out after that. PR is a failing job. Plus I've been labelled 'unqualified'...

ARC is also quite educational (not that it was not educational in the first place, but you kinda get what I mean...). SL Kai Urn taught me Trigonometric Identities today, after how I found out last week that VS jokers learnt sine liao. VIP is severely lagging.... Anyway, after a lot of awesome fooling around with θ, I learnt that SINEθ= Opposite/Hypotenuse, COSINEθ= Adjacent/Hypotenuse and TANGENTθ=Opposite/Adjacent. Remembering what Ms Ng said in Physics Lesson 'then you just plug in all the values and press your calculator...' and thats it. I've learnt basic trigo in 15 minutes. I went home and punched in the graphs of sinX, cosX, tanX, sincostanX, permutated a lot and spammed graph after graph of trigo functions on my GC. Some of them were quite cool. I think it was the costanX one...or was it tansinX...something like that...anyway if you really want to see the 'coolness' of the graphs, go spam it yourself. You just need around 30 minutes...or more...actually a lot lot more...

Hey I'm getting interested in trigo already! I actually mugged math on trigo functions when I went home...that's a good sign of boredom. 1/SINEθ is cosecant, 1/COSINEθ is secant and 1/TANGENTθ is cotangent. Oh goody. Now my brain is feeling very messed up.

Next Saturday is Arrow Recreation Club's annual Ubin Cycling trip. Jianxu, Adriel, Xurong and probably Yong Yi will be joining us. Ah...the Ubin trips are always super funny. And after that we go T3 Swensen's to treat our Sec4s in a JTS. My wallet is angry. (yes, it was always angry...)

Xiu Qi and Sean and all the other Sec4s will be leaving Arrow Recreation Club soon. The Ubin trip is their last official meeting. It's kinda early, but I'm going to wish all the ARC Sec4 who I've known for 3 years to be kind (mostly...) and helpful good luck for their O Levels and I hope to see them in VJ soon!

Okay, firstly, I apologize if you did not appreciate the comic.

My draftsheet was soaked in the rain, so I used my original draft, and I didn't have time to rearrange the drawings and draw boxes and stuff, so the whole 2 and a half page intro has been cut to a barely 1 page thing. That apparently had a lot of computer added stuff.

Yes, it was very improv. No, it was not slipshod.

Okay, I have to rush so this post will be made snappy.

I am too busy to write a proper post of the entire week, expect that somewhere tomorrow or Sunday. My timetable is fully booked, I have to

1. Do a Scout Video
2. Check and research website / domain info for college mag
3. Mug for my tests
4. Do the comic

So yes, I'm completely booked.

About the comic: It is tentatively consisting of 5 parts and it was planned to be released in March. It was freaking delayed till April 1, when I finally decided to start. Owing to heavy rains, the second page has been drenched in the rain on April 3, forcing me to edit feverishly and put together the new layout in less than 1 hour (which I did). It is related to the header for my blog (YES, at LAST, all of you deprived individuals get to find out what the word 'garden' means to Avester...) Expect 1 new chapter (which will hopefully not get soaked) every week (or every 4-5 days).

And it probably is indirectly suanning 1 person. I guess.
